An Introduction to Versification and Epic Meter making use of Online, E-Learning Solutions

Genesis of this Project

This tutorial was developed for incoming students of advanced Latin and Ancient Greek. Initially, students were expected to have learned versification skills early in their studies, but this expectation was disappointed. Both the Latin and Ancient Greek courses had been designed to include only a short review of versification, but when this was found to be insufficient, it became a major problem since the curriculum was already quite full. Also, budgetary funds did not extend to creating remedial courses for these students.

Purpose

This set of tutorials was created not only to bridge this knowledge gap but to save class time and money. Since these tutorials would be online and asynchronous, students would be free to access as much or as little of it as they needed to acquire the basic skills necessary for understanding the fundamental structure of epic poetry in both Latin and Ancient Greek. Due to the design of the tutorials, no extra staff or work hours were required; thus, there were no budgetary overruns.

Results

The tutorials were completed and available to the students within two weeks, and they proved to be quite popular with both students and staff alike. They were also very effective in closing the knowledge gap quickly and efficiently.
